I’ve been thinking about this transgender bathroom issue that has been in the news so much lately. Here are my thoughts:
- Does it affect me personally? There aren’t a whole bunch of people agonizing over women in the men’s room. My child is a boy. My wife is good at avoiding potentially dangerous situations. I might feel differently if I had a daughter, but from a personal standpoint, I don’t care too much one way or the other how this goes down. If anything it gives me another option if ever the men’s room is too crowded or too messy.
- Additionally, I’ve seen the stats from the pro-self-identify-for-bathroom-purposes crowd. Rapes and molestation and pedophilia seem to be limited almost exclusively to heterosexual males. So for those up in arms about this I ask you, “are you really concerned about the safety of your loved ones, or are you just using this as a hill on which to wage a culture war?” I really mean it. Stop for a second and really ask yourself that question.
- Now, for those of you spouting the above mentioned stats. You’re not getting off unscathed here. Is your complete ignorance of the issue feigned or real? If it’s feigned, shame on you. If it’s real, then let me clear up a huge misunderstanding. Those stats have nothing to do with the ostensible concern of the people who are concerned. No one is worried that a transgender person is going to attack their wife or daughter in the restroom. They are concerned that the bad guys mentioned above are going to take advantage of the new laws or regulations to cause great harm. If no one is challenging identity (which seems to be the in vogue thing), then what stops a child molester from claiming to be transgender in order to gain access to facilities where he can further perpetuate his crimes? That is the issue. Solve that problem, and you will regain the high ground in the argument.
- Why is the government getting involved? This was a non-issue. Transgender people have been deciding which bathroom to use for many years and using them largely without issue. Now all the sudden, the government gets involved and transgender people are getting harassed. I just read an article about straight women getting harassed just because they have short haircuts or are wearing boyish clothes. Everything is worse. As usual, the government has caused a great deal of harm to the people that it was supposedly trying to help. Leave us alone Washington. We’ll work this out on our own.
